SWIM MEET 101
The summer league swim season consists of seven meets. Our first meet is our Mock Meet/Time trials followed by five dual meets against our neighboring teams. The final meet of the season is the ASA Championship Meet held at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
Meets are a lot of fun and a lot of work! Below are some things that will help the experience run smoothly for everyone.
MEET SIGN-UP INSTRUCTIONS FOR SWIMMERS & VOLUNTEERS
STEP #1 - VOLUNTEERING: The ASA Swim Teams cannot exist without active and enthusiastic volunteers! Each Fins family is required to volunteer one shift (1/2 of the meet) for each meet your swimmer is competing.
For Volunteer Job Signup:
- Sign in to your Falls Fins account, upper right corner of the screen.
- On the right side of the home page find "Upcoming Events"
- Click on “View All”
- Click the green "Job Sign Up"" tab and sign up for volunteer shifts
- Click "Save" Assignments.
- Click "Back to Signup Calendar".
Volunteer Job Descriptions can be found: HERE
Failure to fulfill your volunteering commitment will result in:
- Your swimmer will not be permitted to compete in swim meets.
- Your family will not be permitted to register for the next season.
STEP #2 - ENTERING YOUR SWIMMER: To accurately track which swimmers will be available for meets, parents need to log in online and indicate whether or not their swimmer will be attending each meet. This is called “Meet Entry”. This is the only way your swimmer will be entered into a meet.
All swimmers are encouraged to participate in every meet. We understand that it is often not possible to make every swim meet due to summer travel plans.
To Declare Your Swimmer: The deadline is Sunday 9pm before each meet
- On the right side of the home page find "Upcoming Events"
- Click on “View All”
- Click on the “MEET ENTRY”
- Click on the "Edit" button
- Declare status for each swimmer "Attending" or "Not Attending"
- Click "Save"
The Head Coach will determine the lineup for each meet. There is an option to add "Notes for the Coach", here you may request events however, the coach needs to balance individual talents while organizing a lineup to maximize our chances of winning the meet. Sometimes your child may swim an event that is not their favorite/best stroke or may be asked to swim-up in a relay so we can have a team in a selected age group. Our coaches are very dedicated to our kids and carefully put together the lineup.

- Volunteers: We love our volunteers and like to know we have all our bases covered, check in with the Volunteer Coordinators upon arrival.
-
Bullpen: - During the meet, each team has a designated team space. Within that space are bullpens, or areas for each age group to sit together between events. Bullpen parents will check in your swimmer upon arrival, ensure that swimmers get to their events, and supervise swimmers between races. Swimmers must remain in the Bullpen for the duration of the meet.

ARM MARKING:
Your swimmer's arm will be marked to indicate which events they are swimming in.
E = Event, H =Heat, L = Lane & the 4th column is the STROKE.

- FR = Freestyle
- BK = Backstroke
- BR = Breaststroke
- FLY = Butterfly
- IM = Individual Medley
- FRR = Free Relay (All swimmers swim freestyle)
- MR = Medley Relay (Each swimmer swims a different stroke: 1st = back, 2nd=breast, 3rd=fly, 4th=free)
Relay Marking: This will designate the relay leg the child is swimming.
- 1/1 = Lane 1, first relay leg
- 4/2 = Lane 4, 2nd relay leg **If the Medley Relay this will be Breast Stroke
Difference between the IM and the Medley Relay: IM stands for Individual Medley. Order: butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and freestyle.
- 100 IM (Individual Medley) is an event in which ONE swimmer swims all four strokes in one race: 25 yards of butterfly, 25 yards of backstroke, 25 yards of breaststroke and 25 yards of freestyle, in this order (note that the IM order is different from the medley relay order).
The Medley Relay order: Backstroke, Breaststroke, Butterfly & Freestyle (tip to remember: it's in alphabetical order).
WEATHER POLICY
Meets are held rain or shine, only delayed or canceled during a thunderstorm.
- Hmmmm...looks like rain. Team Managers, Head Coaches and the Starter determine if a meet will be delayed or cancelled. We are required to wait one hour before making a decision about the meet so please show up.
We follow our pool’s general rules regarding lightning and thunder. The presence of either requires that we vacate the pool and stay out for 30 minutes.
You will be contacted via email and updates will be posted on the Web site if a meet is cancelled.
- The Falls Fins want to be known for our good sportsmanship. Please congratulate the winner no matter what team they are on, please encourage your swimmers to do the same.
- Younger siblings are welcome at meets but please remember that the pools will be used for swim team members only and small children will need to be supervised and watched closely around the water. Baby pools and wading pools are often closed during swim meets. There is no lifeguard on duty for that purpose. Your child’s safety is your responsibility.
Before Leaving the Meet
- Swimmers: Must check-in with the Head Coach and Bullpen Parent before leaving the meet to ensure all events are complete and your swimmer is not needed for additional events or the final relay.
- Parents: Please do not leave before completing your full volunteering shift.
RELAYS: Please don't cancel on relays, especially last minute - if your swimmer is signed up to swim the relay and your swimmers availability has changed. PLEASE INFORM the Bullpen Parent and Head Coach immediately. A relay needs 4 swimmers, if one swimmer is missing the relay team forfeits.
More Helpful Information
Who Swims What:
- Dual meets: Dual meets are when the Fins swim against another neighborhoods in the community. There can be multiple heats per event so that everyone can swim at least two individual events and at least one relay. Each team is assigned even or odd lanes for the meet. Who swims an event may seem to be a mystery; however, after the practice meet our coaches will know more about who can swim what event against which team. Home team swims in even lanes, away teams swims in odd lanes.
- Age Groups: The swimmer's age group is based on the age of the swimmer on June 1st. The age groups are as follows: 6 & Under, 7 - 8yr, 9 - 10yr, 11 - 12yr, 13 - 14yr and 15 - 18yr.
- Swimming Up: In some cases, a swimmer may race in an older age group if the team needs swimmers in that age group. Meets have been won with the help of swimmers who have earned points by swimming "up".
- Order of Events
Scoring: For every event, there are scoring heats (the first heat) and exhibition heats. The dual swim meets are scored as follows:
Individual Events (only two swimmers per team may score points)
- 1st - 5 points,
- 2nd - 3 points
- 3rd - 1 point
Relays (only one relay per team may score points)
- 1st - 7 points
- 2nd - 3 points

What is Mandatory? While we hope you will participate in all the swim meets, we understand that there are family vacations, etc. that may prevent you from participating in EVERY meet. Fun Fridays are optional (but there are games, donuts and ribbons to be had) but a well-deserved reward for the swimmer. Volunteering at your child’s meet is MANDATORY! We hope you will honor your commitments and have fun doing it!
